Blog #19 Productivity + Changes to the blog
Have you ever felt like the more time you have the less productive you are? Recently I have wrapped up my studies. I'm proud of this and excited for everything to come. One thing in particular I was looking forward to was getting a lot more time to develop and write for this blog. I figured that I could just jump right into doing more for my blog now that I'm not trying to meet university deadlines. The funny thing is I'm actually doing less.
Where before I was already tied to deadlines and used to being under pressure, one blog post a week was very doable. Now I want to do much more than simply one post a week but I'm finding it hard to take the time to write or do anything relating to my website. I spent a lot of time at work today thinking about this, why I was not living up to my expectations and how I can change that. Below are some explanations and some plans.
Routine & Goals
The university semester can have a pretty big influence on your lifestyle and habits as a result. During the past semester, the time I launched my blog it all clicked quite well. I was already spending time quietly sat in the library writing. Adding on one blog post was easy and enjoyable.
When I launched the blog I knew I wanted to develop it into something great. However, I also knew that I was brand new to this, was already juggling work/uni, and did not have a concrete idea of where to take it. Setting the goal of 1 post a week was measurable, memorable, and easily achievable. Once the semester started to end and I began exploring interviewing people both this routine and the simple goal I had set broke down.
Uncertainty
The uncertainty I had around where to take my blog and how to develop it became somewhat paralysing. I knew I had these great ambitions to both develop the website and my writing but instead of figuring out how or what that would look like I just did not know what to do. This makes perfect sense when you can't see forward you're less likely to move forward.
I'd be lying if I said I now knew exactly what to do with this blog. I'm still quite uncertain about some of the more long-term plans but taking the time today to think about this made the path forward a whole lot clearer.
The plans from now on
As I have shared previously I will be moving abroad in June 2025. I want to travel, work, meet new people and simply experience living in multiple different places. My current plan is to write 3 blog posts a week and 2 interviews a month in the time before June. I want to make one of these posts a week simply dedicated to sharing my experiences preparing to move abroad.
These plans I have set will help me in many ways. Having a set amount of weekly posts once again with set days will really make it easier to see what my goals is and simply achieve it; it will also get me writing more. The choice to do 2 interviews a month was due to how much more effort they take to produce and allows me to try raise the bar with each one. Writing about preparing to move abroad is a part of my plan as it keeps me on the ball each week when it comes to preparing for my travels, I also feel that so many people out there would likely benefit from a series of posts explaining the dos and dont’s of moving abroad or travel prep.
The three days I want to post each week are Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. I want to use the Friday blog to talk about my travel prep. I'm unsure about what exactly the other two days will be about but will likely keep it open as I plan on expanding my audience by writing about a variety of topics. The weeks that interviews are done they will be released on Sundays.
I have some big plans for this blog and really plan on spending time and money in order to grow it. I appreciate all the kind words and support I've received from so many different people. I'm really excited to grow this website and put my all into it, I hope you can stick around to see what becomes of my little corner of the internet. Thanks for reading, have an amazing day.
