Blog #12 Road trips and mishaps

I got the opportunity during my week to go down to Albany for a friend's birthday.

For those who don’t know I’m originally from Albany. I don’t go there too often because many people I know, including my family moved up. The drive down from Perth is roughly 4.5 hours and somewhat boring. If you look at the Albany highway on Google maps it is an almost straight line through the bush, through the country connecting Perth and Albany.

The drive can be fun if you have good company and good tunes which thankfully I did. Unfortunately, the road is still narrow as fuck, bumpy as fuck and constantly going under road works.

Despite the shitty road I do love getting to run away from the city just for a couple days really makes you feel like all the stress of studies and work does not exist. I worked all day on Tuesday and after work I picked my friend up and we began the drive down.

Since I was on the closing shift and we had to get some last minute supplies we did not leave Armadale until about 8pm. That meant a dark and wet drive and that we likely wouldn’t get to Albany till around midnight.

The drive was largely uneventful until we reached Kojinup. Somewhere on the Albany highway is a small town called Kojinup that is essentially built off the highway. At around 10 pm as we reached Kojinup the lights on my car dash lit up, the engine stopped running and the car literally rolled into town.

Turned out I had not checked the oil and the car was completely out of oil. Thankfully I had a small amount of oil left in the boot and we managed to make it to Albany around 12.30.

The Wednesday was spent mostly drinking at pubs and hanging out with my friends. I had a great time and the day was exactly what I needed.

The Thursday I had to get back to Perth and could not take too long as I would be closing the store again. After a rainy drive up and some awful rush hour traffic that greeted us in Perth I managed to drop my friend off and I got to work.

I am absolutely pooped from my mid week adventure and have spent most of today either catching back up with university and resting.

I definitely recommend the odd impromptu short trip. I had something to look forward to and I really am grateful that I got to hang out with my friends. Whilst trips down to Albany wont be on the menu every week I certainly want to make sure I have things to look forward to.

A trip, night out, or just a special day is essential to get that motivation sometimes. It can be very easy to get weighted down by the daily grind and this trip helped to remind me how important planning good things is.

I love the idea of romanticising your life and I feel like this is in the same vein. Excited to see what I can plan for myself next.

Thanks for reading.
