Blog #34 - New Dog New Routines
This weekend I got myself a new roommate. He's always smiling, loves to run and can't speak English but considering he's a dog that can be forgiven.
Frankie the dog is the newest member of the little unit I call home. Frankie is a young Bordoole (Border Collie x Poodle) that my roommate and his girlfriend just adopted. Frankie is such a bundle of joy and I'm glad to have him at the house.
The idea of getting a dog in has been discussed off and on for a few months now and I've been pretty onboard with the idea. The fact is I'm planning on travelling abroad for an unknown amount of time from around July onwards. I cannot commit to owning a dog but I can certainly enjoy all the benefits of having one around.
Dogs are such an injection of joy and excitement into whatever context they appear. I work at a pet store so I see plenty of dogs and love meeting them all. I've had many quiet days at the house where I wish I had a dog to distract me or give me a good reason to go to the park or the beach. I now have all of these benefits with none of the commitment.
I've only lived with Frankie for 48 hours but already am seeing the effect that having a dog can have on your habits. So much more attention is directed to this big smiling ball of furr that you spend your time differently. I woke up this morning and before I had much time to do anything we were taking Frankie to the agility park. This afternoon as well, I got home and not too long after was at the park with Frankie.
All of these positive grounding practices that I already enjoy and know I should do more are becoming habitual and ingrained into my lifestyle because of a dog in the house. Having a dog adds a level of necessity and excitement to these activities. I cannot wait to take Frankie on one of my runs tomorrow. I just know he will have me running further and faster than usual. Seeing this ball for furr take so much joy from such little things is so wholesome and just fills me up with joy... Maybe that's how parents feel.
It's only early days with Frankie but I’m excited for him to become more settled and excited to see how having a dog around will impact my life and routines for the positive.
Thanks for reading, hope you have an amazing day!
